The instinct to separate landscaping from drainage is understandable. One is about what the garden looks like. The other sounds like plumbing. Underground, though, these two things interact constantly, and the surface decisions made during a landscaping project determine how water moves through the soil for years afterward.
When turf is laid over compacted soil without adequate preparation, the root zone beneath the grass prevents water from penetrating at the rate the surface irrigation delivers it. Water sits in the root zone, saturates the soil around it, and eventually migrates toward the path of least resistance, which may be toward the house, along a fence line, or through an existing sub soil drainage line that was never sized to handle the additional load.

The most effective time to address sub soil drainage in relation to a landscaping project is before the landscaping begins rather than after it is completed. Once soil has been placed, turf laid, and beds established, locating and accessing existing drainage infrastructure requires excavation through finished work.
A pre-landscaping drainage check involves identifying where existing sub soil drainage runs across the site, confirming that the landscaping plan does not place beds, walls, or impermeable surfaces over active drainage lines or outlets, and assessing whether the existing system has the capacity to handle the drainage load the new landscaping will create.
In Western Sydney, including the Penrith District, Hawkesbury, and the Hills District, where reactive clay soils dominate, this check is particularly important. Clay soil already has a limited capacity to drain naturally. Landscaping that increases surface impermeability, adds irrigation load, or disrupts existing drainage paths can push a clay site from manageable to problematic quickly.

Is there existing sub soil drainage on the property, and where does it run?
Where does stormwater from the roof and hard surfaces currently discharge, and does the landscaping change those flow paths?

A sub soil drainage system that is adequate for seasonal rainfall may not be adequate for a lawn being irrigated on a regular schedule through summer. A drainage assessment at the planning stage can identify whether the existing capacity is sufficient or whether additional lines are needed before the lawn is established and the irrigation system commissioned.
What the Warning Signs Look Like After Landscaping Is Complete
