Every decision made during a knockdown rebuild or major renovation has a window in which it is easy, and a window after which it becomes expensive. By the time a builder asks which hot water system you want, the roof pitch is fixed, the plumbing rough-in location has been decided, and the electrical layout is already mapped. Why a New Build Is a Different Conversation From an Upgrade

The third decision is electrical capacity. Heat pump systems and solar diverters require electrical connections that need to be accounted for in the switchboard design. Adding these connections after fit-off is possible but adds cost and sometimes requires switchboard upgrades that would have been included automatically if the specification had been complete at the documentation stage.

In an existing home, the available roof area is whatever the original architect designed, and the north-facing sections are often already occupied by existing roof structures, obstructions, or mechanical services. In a new build, the roof design can include a dedicated north-facing collector zone sized to the household's daily hot water demand, at the pitch angle that maximises solar input for Sydney's latitude, without any of the constraints that make retrofit collector placement a compromise.

For Sydney's climate, which sits in Zone 3 under the federal STC scheme, a correctly sized and positioned solar thermal collector can offset the majority of hot water energy costs across the warmer months, with an electric or gas booster covering periods of low solar input. A heat pump hot water system is a strong alternative for new builds where solar thermal is less suited, typically where the roof orientation limits north-facing collector placement, where roof space is constrained by a complex roofline, or where the homeowner wants the simplicity of a single ground-level unit rather than a roof-mounted collector system.

Heat pumps extract heat from the surrounding air and use it to heat water, which makes them significantly more efficient than conventional electric storage systems without depending on direct solar access. In a new build, the positioning advantage is the same as for solar thermal: the unit can be located with adequate airflow clearance, away from noise-sensitive spaces like bedrooms, and with a short plumbing run to the highest-demand fixtures.
